Monday Enrichment - Science: Creation of the "Blood Bank"

In the early 20th century, the transfusion of blood was rare, labor-intensive, and dangerous. But it could be the “holy grail” of certain medical treatments, if carried out successfully.  Medical practitioners had been attempting just that for several centuries, often with disastrous consequences.

Alan Hoffstadter has been a Clinical Laboratory Scientist for over 50 years, specializing in Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from what was then known as the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, graduating in that new school’s first June class, of 1966. He received his certifications of Medical Laboratory Scientist and Specialist in Blood Banking from Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center, Chicago, where he began his career. Alan then served in Blood Bank management for the Cook County Hospital, and Loyola University Medical Center. Since his retirement, he has continued to teach at Loyola, as well as at RUSH University and the Hines VA Medical Center.
